Ignition cylinder problems; what to do about them!

Ignition problems can prevent us from driving or even starting our cars. That all-important ignition is what starts the whole driving process in the first place, and though ignitions aren’t as often thought of as tires, radiators or engines, they are an essential part of your car’s mechanical make up. Here at Turner Locksmith our automotive technicians offer high quality ignition cylinder repair and replacement. It may surprise you but often, ignition cylinder problems are often something else entirely. This is true no matter what make or model of car, truck or SUV you drive.

The Last Minute

Usually, drivers don’t discover ignition cylinder problems until the very last minute. A planned road trip or much anticipated dinner with a loved one can be on the driver’s mind and not the sudden discovery that the key is stuck or won’t turn in the ignition. The trunk may be packed and the kids dressed and buckled in when “ignition problems” are discovered. Then, a flood of emotions can overtake us; panic, fear of expense, frustration and even guilt or anger. The common reaction is to call a mechanic or AAA for automotive mechanical help. While this may be a possibility, it is wise to wait and try a few things on your own first. A mechanic will often require tow service to take your vehicle to the shop. Why spend all that time and money if you really don’t have to?

Other Options

Here in Wheat Ridge, CO it often gets cold; very cold! If parked outside, or if temperatures have fallen pretty low, cold motor oil can make it hard for your engine to turn over. This can confuse drivers into thinking that their car isn’t starting due to a faulty ignition. Another issue often blamed on a faulty ignition is being in the wrong gear. Many a roadside assistance technician has been called for this one! You can save yourself time, stress and money by checking to see if your car is in the right gear when you are starting it.

Your car needs to be in PARK in order for it to start. Many years ago, cars could start in Neutral but modern vehicles must be in PARK and nothing else. Apply your parking brake and check it to make sure. It’s imperative that the brake is applied. So many accidents and even deaths are reported every year when drivers accidentally failed to be in the right gear and the car rolled forwards or backwards on to them or a neighbor, child or pet. There’s no need for that! Apply your brake and jiggle your gear shift so ensure that your car is indeed in PARK.

Steering Wheel Locked

Another reason mechanics and roadside assistance are often called is because of steering wheel lock ups. Sometimes, when pressure is applied to the steering wheel (leaned upon too hard) it can lock up and prevent the ignition key from turning or even coming back out. Often, this is mistaken for ignition problems when in fact; all that was needed was a firm twist of the steering wheel to unlock it.

Drained Battery

Often, a drained or dead battery will give the same symptoms as that of ignition cylinder problems. It’s best to not confuse the two. Fortunately, there’s a simple and easy check for the battery issue. Apply that parking brake again! You don’t want any accidents while your mind is occupied with battery/ignition issues. Now, see if your headlights are working. If you are not in your garage, you can also test your radio, power windows, windshield wipers, power seats or flashers. If any of these work as they should, the problem is not your battery. A drained battery will often mimic the symptoms of a damaged ignition.

Wrong Key

If you accidentally inserted the wrong key in your ignition and it becomes stuck, your first thought is probably that something is wrong with your ignition system. A wrong transponder key will obviously not start your car and just because it goes in doesn’t necessarily mean that it will fit correctly or even come back out. If you live or work in a place where other drivers are around, it can be easy to mistake another transponder key for yours.

Correct Key – No Chip

If you’ve dropped your car keys, your transponder chip may have fallen out. If you didn’t notice or even know that you’ve got a computer chip in your key’s head, then it may still be lying where it fell. Your key will still work to unlock the car or open the trunk but without the chip to communicate with your car’s onboard computer, it simply won’t start. This action may confuse the driver into thinking that the problem is the ignition, when in fact, it is not.

Call a Locksmith

Any luck with testing the above? No? Then, it’s time to call a locksmith. Be sure to call an experienced, full service automotive locksmith for the best help. Many, like our shop, offer free price quotes and free consultations. It’s best to have a reliable shop already picked out and logged into your mobile phone for occasions like these. A locksmith will be mobile and not expect you to endure a pricey towing to a mechanic’s shop. Instead, he will come to you and many work after-hours and on weekends. Bear in mind that your car’s ignition is very similar to a big lock; it has many of the same interior mechanisms and most automotive locksmiths can professionally service, repair or replace these ignitions, no matter what make or model of vehicle they belong to. For best results get two or three quotes and choose your locksmith of choice from those. Stick with shops that do not shy away from direct questions about licensing, bonding or insurance coverage. You want open and honest locksmiths that offer affordable excellence in their day to day service and nothing less.
